Cinnamon Roll Imperial Ale

Southern Tier Brewing Co.

Crafted in: Lakewood, New York

HopShock Brew Review by Lucas

They Say:  In this brew, lightly toasted malts with subtly spicy hops blend into cinnamon flavors and creamy lactose sugar. Their coalescence is so uncannily close to fresh baked cinnamon rolls that it was impossible to name this beer anything other than Cinnamon Roll Imperial Ale! (www.stbcbeer.com)

Stats & Facts:

ABV: 8.6%

Global Untappd Score:  3.73/5 (>23K reviews)

Flavor Notes: Cinnamon, Caramel, Vanilla

Looks Like:  A nice dark brown with a thin head. The color of this beer is the first of many factors that back up the cinnamon roll flavor claim that Southern Tier has made.

Smells Like:  This beer smells predominantly of cinnamon. The smell is so powerful that cracking open a bottle of this brew might as well be cracking open the oven to check on actual cinnamon rolls. There are other notes of caramel, vanilla, and the sweetness of the malts but they are hidden behind the cinnamon.

Tastes Like:  The first sip of this beer will be an explosion of flavors over the taste buds. The word imperial in the name telling us that the beer will have both a strong favor and a high alcohol content. This beer comes through on both of these expectations. While drinking this beer you will taste everything you could smell. There will be cinnamon, caramel, vanilla and malt as well as a slight taste of the alcohol.

Goes With: From my experience with this beer I can’t imagine eating anything with it. There are so many strong flavors in this beer that there isn’t room for much else. Whether it is after dinner as the dessert or by itself on a cold day this beer will be all you need.

Recommended to Folks Who Like: Cinnamon rolls, strong flavors, and strong beers. If you don’t meet all three of these this probably isn’t the beer for you.

When to Drink: This beer is best enjoyed when you have the time to drink it. It has so much going on that you will have to take it slow in order to enjoy it. So if it’s cold and you have some time to sit around and drink a beer with not much else going on, it would be the perfect time to drink this beer.

Revelations: This beer is very strong and very sweet. It has a good flavor and I really want to like it. With that said, the beer is almost too strongly flavored for me. My opinion improved the more of the beer I drank. Personally, I think this is more to do with the alcohol numbing my tongue than me finding a new taste to enjoy. This beer will not be for everyone but if you like strong, sweet drinks with a heavy dose of cinnamon roll flavor then this beer might just be for you.

I Say: 3/5 – I want to like it.

  1. I thought this beer was delicious and sweet. It tasted so much like a cinnamon roll that I’m not sure I could drink a lot of it cause it was so rich. Definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a cozy night in by the fire with this beer!
