They Say:

“Our brand new citrus IPA is exploding with bright citrus aroma and flavor. Creating an exciting new variation on our flagship Loose Cannon, TropiCannon clocks in at the same 7.25%ABV as its cousin, but packs a full blast of blood orange, grapefruit, mango and lemon flavor. We’ve downplayed some of Loose Cannon’s piney-ness and amped up the citrus by swapping Centennial and Palisade hops for Amarillo and even more Simcoe” (http://www.hsbeer.com/brews/brew/VuhdKSUAAMkLNmtt)

Looks Like:

Golden clear body with an orange tint. Mild carbonation accompanied by a small, bubbly head.

Smells Like:

Orange! Obviously…If I were to peel an orange and take a big whiff, this is what I would imagine. I have a bias toward orange flavored beer, but this one stood out with just how strong the scent was. I could also get a slight hint of lemon radiating in the background. There was also a pungent bitterness that snuck through as well, giving this the classic IPA scent.

Tastes Like:

A whole lot of citrus! That blood orange mingles beautifully with the lemon, grapefruit, and mango. It was such a clean taste that I could barely identify a malt flavor. It was completely overshadowed by the hard-hitting fruits. The use of citrus hops add an even sweeter tang to the overall taste.

When to Drink:

It’s summer time, the heat is blazing, and you want a beer. Open up the fridge and snag a TropiCannon. This orange overload will refresh your taste buds and satisfy your craving no matter what. Laying on the beach, out on the boat, or just lounging on the back patio, Heavy Seas really gave us a smooth beverage to take a break from real life.

Revelations/Recommendations:

Citrus IPAs are my favorite style of beer, so for me this was a wonderful experience. If you enjoyed this brew I would recommend trying Elysian Superfuzz Blood Orange Pale Ale or Flying Dog Bloodline Blood Orange Ale. With mild IBUs of 45, this is a great middle-of-the-road brew for those who do not want the extremes. If double IPAs are too much for you, and hazy New England IPAs are too juicy and creamy for you, this is a great balance between the two. You had a rough day at work right? So go ahead and indulge, a TropiCannon is waiting for you.

KevMal’s Rating:  4.25/5 – A great citrus IPA that was right up my alley
